Pope Francis relayed the Spark of Mercy to young people from six continents. They will carry the spark from Krakow back to their home countries so that it will reach every corner of the world.
On 26 July, a symbolic relay with the Spark of Mercy set off during the Opening Mass in the Divine Mercy Sanctuary. The inspiration behind this idea were the words from the Diary of Sister Faustina, who heard the following promise while praying: “I bear a special love for Poland (…). From her will come forth the spark that will prepare the world for My final coming” (1732). The spark was brought onto the altar during the Opening Mass, and a torch that was lit from this spark was present during all of the WYD Main Events.
Pope Francis passed torches lit from the Spark of Mercy on to representatives of six continents: Marian Dovhanyk from Ukraine represented Europe, Do Quyen Di from Vietnam – Asia, Thamyres Gonclaves from Brazil – South America, Basia Wudarczyk from USA – North America, Labat Steven Reda Raymond – Africa, and Penny Jane Badwal represented her home of Australia.
